We all get them, a leaflet through your door offering super cheap and discounted offers for rug, carpet and upholstery cleaning services. But lets look at this a little closer..

The company advertising will often give very little away about themselves, check for a local address and see if they have a local telephone number, many companies these days will use free phone telephone numbers to hide the fact that they are from another county or region.

Look for Trade Qualifications ~ For example, in the carpet cleaning industry, the recognised qualification is to become an NCCA member (The National Carpet Cleaners Association) this involves course attendance and examination passes before membership is offered. Many carpet cleaners will try to convince you that a basic course thrown in with a machine purchase or membership of  a website that checks trades is enough, well, in our opinion it is not. Many carpets, rugs and soft furnishings are ruined each and every year due to lack of, or no knowledge at all, with operators simply learning at your expense.

Talking about expense, why not try to calculate the cost of replacing your soft furnishings, favourite rugs and carpets ? You will be shocked! If your sofa and matching chairs cost £3000, are you really sure that you are willing to let someone clean it for £30 or £40 ? Often very cheap solutions are used to try and keep the cost down, usually detergents that remain in the fabric, rapidly attracting more dirt and dust.

An image of a rug recently cleaned in the historic town of Battle in East Sussex. This rug didn’t look particularly soiled when we arrived at our customers home,  but after a thorough vacuum and agitation session using our preferred non toxic cleaning solution, the rug was starting to look brighter. The effect after the extraction process had taken place is clear to see. Our client lived in a very old house in Battle, situated on the high street, I suspect a large amount of diesel dust in the rug fibres would be the main cause of the rugs grey appearance, which changed immediately when we extracted using our new Jaguar carpet cleaning system.

I personally enjoy our visits to Battle, the ancient town boasts many attractions, including the Abbey and lovely individual shops and restaurants, but I really like the little Delicatessens and bakeries.

This rug is valued at over £30,000, careful cleaning was required.

An existing client was very nervous when talking to us about cleaning a beautiful rug, which was understandable as it cost over £30k. We thoroughly vacuumed the rug, applied our specialist non toxic cleaning solution which was gently agitated using a soft brush. Extraction followed using pure water. The fringes were brushed with micro splitting solution and extracted using a specialist hand tool. The rug responded perfectly, after a twenty minute dwell time the colours and radiance were restored and the stunning rug looked its best again. Our customer inspected the rug and was relieved to see it looking its best.

We spend a lot of time working in Seaford, East Sussex,  just recently cleaning the carpets at Specsavers Opticians in Seaford Town centre.  The most recent job was cleaning two large sofa’s in Arundel Road, Seaford, the results were so good that we shot a video, please click this small link to view. Our customer has two dogs that liked to use the upholstery rather than their baskets, but who can blame them? With so many fabulous walks around Seaford and in particular, Seaford sea front, sand, soil, dust a mud will easily be transferred from your dogs paws to your sofa or armchair.

Before the final clean was executed, we had already agitated our solution after a thorough vacuum of the sofa, then finishing the job using a turbo drier, the upholstery was ready for use within one hour of the completed clean. The caption above is of Seaford beach as we removed large quantities of sand because our customer takes her dogs there for regular walks. Sand can cause premature wear whilst sitting at the base of upholstered fibres, vacuum your sofa regularly and clean every 18 months.

Richard Hall, head of the Veterinary  parasitology group at Bristol stated that the risk of tick infestation is far higher than previously though. This study also confirmed that a non native tick is also establishing itself in Southern England. The tick infestation rate of domestic dogs at any one time is around 15%. Lyme disease is often carried by ticks which can damage the nervous system and human hearts if left untreated.

Retrievers and setters are more prone to picking up ticks than any other domestic dogs.

Check dogs regularly for ticks, also controlling the cleanliness of your indoor environment will have an impact on the likely-hood of human exposure to parasites. Using a Hydramaster Van mounted cleaning system at very high temperatures (220 degrees) will kill unwanted insects living in your carpet.

Whilst cleaning carpets for a customer in Hove, East Sussex recently we discovered a carpet moth infestation literally inches from her bedstead. A large rug was removed from under her bed and then the bed pulled away from the wall for cleaning,  this revealed a large section of natural fibre carpet that had been eaten by the carpet moths, patches of carpet backing were clear to see.  After close inspection, the rug removed from under the bed also had moth damage. We have been cleaning carpets and rugs in the Brighton and Hove area for over 25 years and have noticed a growing problem with carpet moths.

Carpet moths will produce hundreds of tiny cases (shown above) that will then develop into more carpet moths in time, they usually hide their cases underneath heavy items of furniture away from direct sunlight, they will even use a natural glue to fix them underneath beds, wardrobes and other large items.

We have seen natural fibre rugs consumed to the rug backing on many occasions, much to our customers horror.

What can you do? Regularly move items of furniture (when possible) check underneath and behind each item, take a good look at our image (copy and paste this url for future reference) and keep an eye open for moth cases.
