Before and after image whilst cleaning a rug in Battle, East Sussex

An image of a rug recently cleaned in the historic town of Battle in East Sussex. This rug didn’t look particularly soiled when we arrived at our customers home,  but after a thorough vacuum and agitation session using our preferred non toxic cleaning solution, the rug was starting to look brighter. The effect after the extraction process had taken place is clear to see. Our client lived in a very old house in Battle, situated on the high street, I suspect a large amount of diesel dust in the rug fibres would be the main cause of the rugs grey appearance, which changed immediately when we extracted using our new Jaguar carpet cleaning system.

I personally enjoy our visits to Battle, the ancient town boasts many attractions, including the Abbey and lovely individual shops and restaurants, but I really like the little Delicatessens and bakeries.

An existing client was very nervous when talking to us about cleaning a beautiful rug, which was understandable as it cost over £30k. We thoroughly vacuumed the rug, applied our specialist non toxic cleaning solution which was gently agitated using a soft brush. Extraction followed using pure water. The fringes were brushed with micro splitting solution and extracted using a specialist hand tool. The rug responded perfectly, after a twenty minute dwell time the colours and radiance were restored and the stunning rug looked its best again. Our customer inspected the rug and was relieved to see it looking its best.

We spend a lot of time working in Seaford, East Sussex,  just recently cleaning the carpets at Specsavers Opticians in Seaford Town centre.  The most recent job was cleaning two large sofa’s in Arundel Road, Seaford, the results were so good that we shot a video, please click this small link to view. Our customer has two dogs that liked to use the upholstery rather than their baskets, but who can blame them? With so many fabulous walks around Seaford and in particular, Seaford sea front, sand, soil, dust a mud will easily be transferred from your dogs paws to your sofa or armchair.

Before the final clean was executed, we had already agitated our solution after a thorough vacuum of the sofa, then finishing the job using a turbo drier, the upholstery was ready for use within one hour of the completed clean. It is important to define the type of fibre that you are cleaning, whether it a natural fibre or synthetic. Natural fibres will always absorb moisture whilst synthetics will release moisture, carpet and rug construction is another important consideration ~ is the carpet tufted or woven? If you mix the two factors (polypropylene fibre and woven construction) you then have a Belgian Wilton, those two words that can send shivers down many carpet cleaners spines!

A Belgian Wilton will shrink if your cat sneezes on it! With fitted Belgian Wilton carpets, how can you tell? The answer is to release the carpet from the gripper rods, just enough to see the backing, the facing fibre will wrapped around the weft threading, right into the carpet backing.

The petroleum based synthetic fibre which in turn attracts oil based soils, because of this the fibres can become very soiled, this type of staining is not easily removed, emulsification seems to be the obvious course of action, but this process will see the carpet pulling from its fixing, even a secure one. The fibres do not absorb moisture thus the extraction process will not completely remove all water used in the cleaning process, which means excess moisture ending up in the Jute backing, this ends in shrinkage, Jute is a very tight weave and will not re-stretch.

The best possible cleaning method for Belgian Wilton rugs and carpets is a low moisture system or dry compound extraction. This is why it is always advisable to employ a properly trained carpet and rug cleaning expert.

I was looking forward to seeing the amount of dry soil that I could get out of it before any cleaning took place, I prepared my dust collecting plastic sheet, making sure that it was flat and fixed to the floor.

After fifteen minutes continuous vacuuming on the rug’s facing surface, I turned it over, face down. Again, I vacuumed the rear of the rug for a full thirty minutes, resisting the temptation to take a peek.

I then removed the rug from the sheet, I was greeted by a huge quantity of sand, grit, skin, soil and much more, the grey deposit looked like sand, I carefully swept the dust into a pile and then into my dustpan, the entire dust  content of this rug filled a standard mug, right to the surface!

Before any cleaning had taken place, I had managed to remove a serious amount of dry soil, which is crucial when trying to clean a rug. I do often get asked to ‘run over’ people’s rugs when I am carpet cleaning, without following the correct method, you can actually damage a rug, the quantity of dust I had just removed would have quickly turned into mud/sludge…….now that would be difficult to remove.

This rug had come from a sleepy part of Meads, Eastbourne, not a house near a busy road or in a city, just imagine the dry soil in your innocent looking rug.
