Our first client from Battle, East Sussex had a naturally dyed rug that was laid over a very nice wool / synthetic mix carpet,  her cat had upset a vase of flowers, which in turn landed on the rug.  When she arrived home, the accident was noticed immediately and all water spilt on the rug mopped up. Unfortunately the rug had bled,  mixing some red dye into the cream back ground of the rug, but more importantly, red dye had transferred directly from the rug into the carpet fibres, colouring the carpet.

This is a problem that we simply couldn’t solve, dye had established itself in the carpet fibres, which meant it was NOT a stain. Our lady in Battle was devastated when she realised that this problem could really only be solved by changing the carpet, in other words, an insurance claim.

Our only suggestion is to attach a thin piece of plastic to the backing of your rug to avoid this happening to you, if time is taken doing so,  the rug will not show any signs of the protection although rug movement could be increased by reducing the natural grip it has with the carpet.

Be careful if you try to clean a rug too, ensure that the correct tests are performed to discover the colour stability of the rug.

Keeping carpets clean isn’t easy, especially when you have four children, the image shows us cleaning the carpet between the entrance lobby and main dining room, this is usually the busiest part of any home.

These carpets were cleaned using no toxic chemicals, the system is also non re-soiling too, a real benefit, this is largely due to the fact that we are not using detergents with sticky residues.

Our carpet cleaning system is imported from the states and is called a Jaguar extractor, customers often comment not only on the quality of our cleaning,  but also the drying time, which is considerably faster than a standard carpet cleaning system.

We enjoy our business here at Natural Carpet Care, we are often cleaning rugs, carpets and soft furnishings, but also clean Leather furniture. Here is an image taken in Furze Hill in Hove recently.

Fibre protection

Everyone has experienced accidents involving spillage and staining on carpet and upholstery fibres. It just takes a split second, trying to open a door, walking upstairs with a cup of tea in your hand and missing a step…very frustrating, especially if the beautiful cream carpet  (that was only laid a few weeks before) ends up with a stain that won’t budge.

We use superb carpet protectors here at Natural Carpet Care.  Application is recommended  just after the carpet is fitted or immediately after the carpet has been cleaned. Carpet protection not only offers excellent spillage resistance but also helps the fibres resist re-soiling, this will actually prolong the life of your carpet. The process is straightforward and when the protector is dry will not change the colour or appearance of you carpet, rug and upholstery fibres.

A busy day at the office! Cleaning Rugs at Natural Carpet Care

We all get them, a leaflet through your door offering super cheap and discounted offers for rug, carpet and upholstery cleaning services. But lets look at this a little closer..

The company advertising will often give very little away about themselves, check for a local address and see if they have a local telephone number, many companies these days will use free phone telephone numbers to hide the fact that they are from another county or region.

Look for Trade Qualifications ~ For example, in the carpet cleaning industry, the recognised qualification is to become an NCCA member (The National Carpet Cleaners Association) this involves course attendance and examination passes before membership is offered. Many carpet cleaners will try to convince you that a basic course thrown in with a machine purchase or membership of  a website that checks trades is enough, well, in our opinion it is not. Many carpets, rugs and soft furnishings are ruined each and every year due to lack of, or no knowledge at all, with operators simply learning at your expense.

Talking about expense, why not try to calculate the cost of replacing your soft furnishings, favourite rugs and carpets ? You will be shocked! If your sofa and matching chairs cost £3000, are you really sure that you are willing to let someone clean it for £30 or £40 ? Often very cheap solutions are used to try and keep the cost down, usually detergents that remain in the fabric, rapidly attracting more dirt and dust.

An image of a rug recently cleaned in the historic town of Battle in East Sussex. This rug didn’t look particularly soiled when we arrived at our customers home,  but after a thorough vacuum and agitation session using our preferred non toxic cleaning solution, the rug was starting to look brighter. The effect after the extraction process had taken place is clear to see. Our client lived in a very old house in Battle, situated on the high street, I suspect a large amount of diesel dust in the rug fibres would be the main cause of the rugs grey appearance, which changed immediately when we extracted using our new Jaguar carpet cleaning system.

I personally enjoy our visits to Battle, the ancient town boasts many attractions, including the Abbey and lovely individual shops and restaurants, but I really like the little Delicatessens and bakeries.

Be careful when purchasing antiques or second hand furniture ~

A regular route into our home is via a piece of used furniture, rugs or even second hand clothes, larvae or even the moths themselves can be hiding in the lining or backing of rugs. The simple answer is to thoroughly clean any item before bringing into your home, hot wash clothing, employ a professional carpet cleaning company to clean soft furnishings and rugs. Cleaning ~

Investing in a quality vacuum cleaner will remove eggs and cases from the carpet fibres, be sure to remove the bag immediately after using the vacuum cleaner too, if you leave them in the cleaner they will simply consume the dust and fly out and continue to eat your natural fibres in your home. It is extremely important to move furniture regularly, beds, book cases, large units and drawers are a favourite hiding place for the carpet moth, also, up-end these units periodically as the carpet moth can attach the cases underneath too.

Natural Products ~

Cedar balls are becoming more popular as a moth deterrent, but the only downside is that the cedar balls properties fade after a few months and you will need to invest in more.

Vacuum pack and store ~

Once you have washed and cleaned your clothes, seal your coats and suits in plastic storage bags. This is very sensible action to take particularly if you own expensive silk or cashmere suits. Garments that can’t be washed can be placed in plastic and frozen, this will deal with the eggs and larvae too.
