We all love our pets, the problem is that our pets enjoying using our soft furnishings, rugs and carpets the way we do. Our cats and dogs have claws and sharp teeth, these often prove to be a problem as they can easily snag carpet, rug and soft furnishing fibres. If you notice tufts that have been pulled, carefully snip the fibre at the same height as other fibres, this will lower the risk of more damage to your carpets, rugs and upholstery.
Other problems associated with pets is often urine damage, not only does cat / dog urine produce bad odours but if left untreated can leave fibres damaged and stained as urine will often have a burning effect due to the high levels of acidity. Blotting to begin with is key, use a non colour-fast cotton towel to draw out as much of the offending liquid as possible, try to avoid scrubbing!
Other problems can be caused by dogs drying themselves on your fibres, I know our Labrador will do exactly this, after a long run along the seafront she will rub herself all over our area rugs and soft furnishings, this can have different end results, from staining to extreme ‘doggy’ smells, you may have noticed this on your travels when visiting people with dogs.
Premature fibre abrasion can also be caused by large deposits of sand and grit, cats and dogs will bring in regular amounts on their coats over the months, even though we all vacuum our carpets, rugs and upholstery regularly, professional extraction cleaning will remove deep down ground in deposits. Also consider the vast quantities of sand and grit that local authorities are now spreading around our roads, its simply impossible to avoid quantities of grit and sand entering our homes and workplaces.
